Default Preflop, whatever.

You're in a live 30 or 60 game, folded to you in the CO.

Would you rather be open raising with 22 or 97s and why and on what does it depend?

I'm not sure it matters which is better, a more pertinent question is individually examinnig if they are +EV, in any event that is how I would approach it, and as a default, raise em up!

Because I can already beat a bluff.

It doesn't.

97s can take some heat if someone plays back at you. 22 gets scared too easily if anyone even coughs in your direction.

I would much rather have the 22 for a couple reasons. If you get called you are most likely beat with the 9/7. Suited means nothing heads up. At showdown you cannot win with nine high. Dueces takes the pot if your opponent doesnt improve. I will jack it up with either of them when opening from the cutoff but i would much rather have a small pair than two medium cards.

In my opinion Tommy has this exactly right. Being able to win a showdown unimproved is a huge advantage in shorthanded pots, especially when you have position and may well have an option to check behind someplace.

I don't think it's particularly close either. Off the top of my head, I'd say 22 equals, maybe, A7. A7 is a little better in that when behind, you have more outs, but 22 can beat dominating big aces unimproved, a major edge.

The extra 5% or so that you win the pot because of your suitedness is definitely more than nothing.
