Hard Drive reads: Free space: 722GB Total Size: 686GB.. WTF?!

My hard drive's capacity is actually 40gb and i probably have about 36gb in use. Does any one know whats happened, or better yet how to fix it? thanks

5 bucks says your free space is actually 686 MB, since a windows formatted 40GB drive registers as about 36.7 GB, and you claim to have about 36GB in use.
