Default Smashing Bugs -- Problems?

There was a moderately sized spider crawling on my bedroom wall that my girlfriend frantically brought to my attention. When I knocked it down and went to smash it, I couldn't believe that I was second guessing myself, considering that I should remove the spider from my room using a paper cup. I couldn't help but thinking how beneficial spiders are and that i'd actually be ending its life. I would never have these thoughts if the critter were a fly, ant, or earwig type bug. Does anyone else ever have that feeling? I feel as a guy I should be able to smash spiders with my bare hands and laugh, but after killing it I felt sorry for about 2 minutes (tops).

Apparently, you're a 12 year-old prepubescent girl.

Which is good, because I finally have someone to give this training bra to.

Here you go, Josephina. Does that feel good on your new budding bosoms?

"It sure does, Mister..."

how big must a creature be before you feel remorse for causing its death?

-ant size?
-tiny mammal? tiny fish? tiny reptile?
-big crustacean/insect? fish?
-medium-large wild mammal?
-domesticated pets who you believe have human feelings?
-humans?

If it's insect or rodent in nature and it's invaded my space, I have no problem terminating it, unless it's actually easier to shoo it out the door. The occasional bird gets chased out.

I let spiders live: they kill flies. Flies are hard to kill. I also don't kill flies: they feed my spiders.

If it's not a spider and not a fly, though, it's dead.

Killing spiders is -EV for reasons already mentioned. If they are big and/or hairy, however, I would be more inclined to opt for termination.
