Stud 8 Book thoughts
Greetings,
Been a while since I've posted...my apologies, been busy with many things going on, but I wanted to post to get some thoughts as I think for content this is the best forum out there. As some know, I wrote a book on 7-stud hi lo. This was the follow-up book to my first text, and I think it is an improvement for a few reasons. For one, I go into greater detail. I try to gear it for the beginner and more experienced player, though the publisher I submitted it to thought it might be too technical so they passed on it (also saying not enough people play stud 8); they also said it wasn't "fun" enough for the reader and was too deep for their audience; I explain stud 8 carefully though in the first pages as it's a difficult game for many. I also hired a math professor to do odds tables for me in this text, and include some added concepts such as semi-bluffing. The book was also read by a fellow player on Stars who has won several stud 8 tournaments and is a solid stud 8 player, and his assessment was favorable of the text. It's been online as an e-book for the past year, but I'm happy it may have found a home now. The publisher I contacted indicated an interest in publishing it next spring. It's a little over 250 pages, double-spaced, on MS Word. The point of the post is that I'm looking for some comments on the text, as I may have finally found a home after my editor at pokermagazine.com encouraged me to write another book (I told her about this book, and a future book idea). I'd be happy to send a PDF to anyone interested in reading this text. I'd also like to say that while I think my first book is good for beginners, I would make some changes to it, emphasizing more aggression, a larger buy-in, position, greater detail about the online game, and semi-bluffs along with more detail to bets on fifth street. I appreciate the feedback on this forum. Anyway, if anyone is interested in reading it, I'd love comments as it would go to press potentially next spring, giving me time to consider any changes. It's what's worked for me at the stud 8 tables, but perhaps something is missing that needs more emphasis. I'm also working on a limit hold 'em book for micro and low stakes players; yes, there are good books on that already, but I enjoy writing and have found a lot of success at this game, despite the suck-out factor, as the level of play is astonishing at brick and mortar rooms in particular in what people cold call with and chase with. Say hi if you'r ever down at Canterbury - I'm usually dressed like a fish with a "hold 'em" Hawiian shirt in the summer months. Finally, note my book is for low limit stud 8 - it may work at higher limits, but I play mainly online and in the rare times it goes off 6/12 at Canterbury and have played 1-5 spread limit at another tribal casino here in MN as well. I'm not going to lie and say I've played 30/60 as I can't afford this, but the stud 8 tables at micro and low limits are always going strong on Stars, and I suspect there might be a niche for this book. Look forward to feedback, and if I make some changes based on suggestions, of course I'd put your name in the "acknowledgement" section I'm very pleased with the book as-is, but one can never have enough opinions. Thanks, Paul |

Please don't release anything that will make fishies and less fishy.
Seriously, I'd be happy to read it and give you some input should the offer still be open. |

Re: Stud 8 Book thoughts
Not sure where you want you feedback, but here is something I saw on first glance
"Aces alone may win the pot, but they may not improve" This is really awkward. Say something like, "while Aces alone may win the pot, it is best to thin the field to improve your chances of winning" This will cut out the need for the next sentence, and make your point more clear. |

Re: Stud 8 Book thoughts
"do not get just limp with aces" in the starting hand discussion, of course, "get" doesnt belong.

Re: Stud 8 Book thoughts
Hmm...in my MS Word version it reads: "don't get savvy and just limp with aces." Hope that wasn't a conversion problem into pagemaker. Strange.

Re: Stud 8 Book thoughts
Savvy is not the right word there. A savvy player would not limp if limping is wrong.

Re: Stud 8 Book thoughts
Ok, I'll consider a change in wording there. I guess I was trying to imply that the person limping would think they would be savvy by slowplaying a perceived monster, when in fact they are making a bad decision.
