Ground effect hovercraft; pretty sweet
Don't know if this has come up before, but this company makes a recreational ground effect craft. It's a hovercraft with wings attached, and the air pressure between the wings allow it ot "fly" a few feet off the water.
Hoverwing No need for a pilot's license, as they are considered boats. The Soviets made lots of huge military ones. They looked like funny-looking cargo planes with surface-to-surface missles. |

Re: Ground effect hovercraft; pretty sweet
I think one of these features at the end of the game Metal Gear Solid 3. I can't really see their use in modern day society though, might as well have a harrier jump jet.
Though i guess for the civilian it's pretty sweet. |

They can carry significantly more weight than an airplane, so you get better-than-jet cargo loads with faster-than-boat speed. Boeing is developing one for long range transport called the Pelican.
Travel over ice is also convenient. But mostly I just think it's cool. |

This website is confusing me, how much do these things actually cost?

Re: Ground effect hovercraft; pretty sweet
The problem is all the options involved, and how much the assembly you do on your own. When I priced one out a couple years ago, I believe it was $4-10K for the hoverwing, depending on how much work you wanted them to do and the engine type. A used one was up on their site that had a big ass chevy engine for around $8K, and could go 80+ MPH.
