Need advice to find a good 2 player strategy game

hello POGgers,

i am looking to find a good strategy game that works with 2 players (more is fine too).

my girlfriend wants to have a game we can play together and that is NOT poker-related nor chess.

we visited a local game shop and they recommended the following titles:

Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride
Lost Citites
Balloon Cup

if you could recommend one of these or perhaps offer additional suggestions, i would be grateful. ideally, the game will involve at very least a moderate amount of stategic gameplay (so that we won't soon get bored of it).

Carcassone is good.. Lost Cities is an awesome card game if you want a fun game that takes minimal amount of time.

Along those lines my favorite game of this type is Puerto Rico.. you'll want more than 2 but the game is great.

I haven't played it, but I like the looks of Carcassonne. My wife wasn't too interested in it, though, so we didn't get it. I'm not much a fan of Ticket to Ride and I especially can't imagine it being all that great with just two players.

Carcassone is excellent, I highly recommend for people who want a great game that is not as intense as Chess or Go. If you and your gf find the play a little too random, I use a house rule where each player has a hand of tiles to play from each round (normally 3 in hand, could go upwards of 5 I suppose).

nothing else is really close when you exclude really mainstream games like chess or go

edit: carcasone is a real grind with only 2 players, much more fun with 3+

Catan is cool, I haven't played Hannibal.

If you use the river and a hand of tiles instead of randomly placing each turn 2 player Carcassone is more enjoyable.
