Default Cosmic Encounter

Anyone here ever play the old tabletop game Cosmic Encounter?

I'm aware that there's a more recent version that's heavily crippled, but I'm talking about the original version (1970's?) with the nine expansion packs (about a hundred powers, flares, etc.), by Eon.

I played this heavily in the mid-80's, and even built up my own set from my friend's original by blatant copyright violation (i.e. Xerox onto cardstock) because it was completely out of print.. We usually played with 3 powers per person.

Probably the best game of its type ever made.. Imagine something like the XMen WW game, except that every player had three unique (and secret) powers out of a list of a hundred, and those powers could be enhanced with certain cards...

Sigh. Good times Anyone else?

This game absolutely ruled. The recent reprints are a travesty to the memory of this game.

Love this game. I used to play quite a lot in the mid 90s. We kept it pretty simple, though - usually just one power, occasionally two.

What have they done to the game with the reprints?

The original reprints went back to the basic set, which really wasn't much fun. The newer ones, I believe, pick and choose among the expansion powers, and tweak some of them. I'm sure it's good for people who didn't play the original. My group very rarely played with moons or reverse hexes, so the loss of those doesn't really bother me..

Plus, plastic tokens? What's up with that?

Looks like you can buy the expansions for $50-80 apiece, if you can find 'em.

I never played it, but I think as a kid I got it, or a game similar to it at a garage sale, but no one had any idea what to do with it and it never got played.

Pretty sure this game is the most amazing thing ever.

Nope, no longer have it.
Someone had taken tubes of toilet paper, and cut them into sections and used them to hold all of the little game pieces.
