I'm currently trying to teach a mate STTs, he's playing the $3.40 and I'm reviewing his HHs. This hand has left me a bit confused as to what I should advise. BTW please don't answer with "if you don't know what to do in that situation you shouldn't be teaching anyone anything" (i'll cry ).
Obviously this was played pretty poorly, my question is should this be a raise to 350-375 or a push into 7 people considering Hero is at just over 10BB Neither option really leaves me feeling happy. Would the answer change at $16s / $27s ? yeah, the call was weak, but I think more importantly, the fold to the button(who is the chip leader) with a min raise was just horrible. Hero should have pushed there.

Just kidding of course.
I think limping is the worst option. You don't need to burn chips when you are about to be blinded. I know there is a consensus to fold 88,77 here, so folding could be an option. I don't think it's wrong either way between a standard raise or a fold. It's a $3.40 so ranges must be very wide if you push. Run the numbers on those. It can't be good. So, I would probably put out a standard raise of 3x and call all in if pushed over. Push almost all flops are just called by one person. Be fairly aggressive if called by two as well because the pot is going to be huge & you need it after raising. |

I think the hand is worth a call. The pot is offering you 4.5:1. You have a decent hand, but your position sucks. The pot will be around 750 if you call, and you stack will still be 1200. You're not tied to the pot yet, so take a flop and reevalute.

I like open-pushing in this situation. It may seem early and you do have slightly more than 10x BB, but you are hitting the blinds next, and 99 fares well against most hands. Using SNG-PT, no matter what their calling ranges, this is a +EV push.

With blinds at only 150, I'm not sure the risk/reward is right to push here from UTG. I like the limp - you can fold if someone shows strength, or you might start a limp-fest, which is great if the flop hits you.
The fold after the min-raise is horrible. Knowing that I'm heads-up against a large-stack button (who is probably loose), I'd strongly think about pushing now. Otherwise, call and see the flop. |
