Default Annual HULA Draft Report 2005

HULA 3 Draft Report

Capt.: EdTost
1(01): SpicyF
2(20): Bunky9590
3(21): Private Joker
4(40): Pizzownored(SP?)
5(41): Colgin

Pre-season Ranking: 9th

Comments: Ed's selection of SpicyF with the first overall pick was a shock to draft observers. SpicyF is a high limit player with heads up experience, but there are questions surrounding his reliability and sources say that Gonores and Schneids were superior choices. SpicyF certainly has a lot of pressure on him this season to justify his #1 overall selection.

Ed's middle and late round selections were questionable. After his SpicyF selection, none of the players he obtained have heads-up experience and all except Bunky have limited shorthanded experience.

Capt.: Evan
1(02): Gonores
2(19): Danenania
3(22): King Yao
4(39): Rubeskies
5(42): Nolanfan34

Pre-season Ranking: 1st

Comments: Evan's selection of Gonores at #2 overall was the right selection--though it would be hard to make a bad pick at this spot. Gonores is a high limit player with substantial Heads Up experience. Gonores was criticized earlier in the year for his too-tight pre flop play in a well publicized match against James282.

In the second and third rounds, Evan found great value. Danenania is a talented shorthanded 10/20 player who fell to late in the second round because of his hiatus from poker. King Yao is a well respected shorthanded player and author who formerly played high limit B&M games. His experience in B&M games honed his player reading skill and gives him an edge over the online multi-tablers who focus more on metrics than betting patterns.

Evan's 4th and 5th round picks were excellent value and round out the team to beat in HULA 3.

Capt.: Grisgra
1(03): Schneids
2(18): Fyodor
3(23): Bubu
4(38): B Dids
5(43): Arkady

Pre-season Ranking: 5th

Comments: Grisgra was seen jumping up and down with glee with top high limit shorthanded player Schneids fell into his lap at #3. Schneids is an Ambassador for the HUSH forum and known for his excellent player reads and his trickiness.

Grisgra's mid and late round picks were uninspiring. Fyodor is a veteran shorthanded player but Grisgra passed up better value in Danenania and King Yao.

Capt.: rmarotti
1(04): Bicyclekick
2(17): Cnfuzzd
3(24): PokerBob
4(37): Belloc(Sp?)
5(44): Popinjay

Pre-season Ranking: 8th

Comments: rmarotti makes the easy, appropriate selection of Bicyclekick with the fourth overall selection. Bicyclekick is the last player on the board with both high limit and HU experience. He is notorious for running hot and rmarotti hopes that BK will act as a talisman for the rest of the team.

After the 1st round, rmarotti's draft falls apart. Cnfuzzd was taken over more experienced players like danenania, king yao, stinkypete, maxx and joe826. The infamous PokerBob selection incited audible laughter throughout the draft room. rmarotti's 5th round pick Popinjay was reportedly so disgusted with the draft that he refused to sign on with the team.

Capt.: Guyontilt
1(05): Stripsqueez
2(16): Entity
3(25): MarkL44
4(36): Death Donkey
5(45): Catch of the Day

Pre-season Ranking: 10th

Comments: Guyontilt's selection of stripsqueez was roundly criticized by observers who cited his unreliability in past HULA seasons. Stripsqueez is a solid, thinking player but he is a Boom or bust pick.

Guyontilt's 2nd and 3rd round picks missed the mark. Entity is a respected HUSH contributor and 5/10 6-max player, but GOT passed up several experienced mid limit players to select him. He may have been available in the 3rd round when GOT picked. GOT followed this questionable pick up with a selection of MarkL44 in the 3rd. Again, MarkL44 is reputedly a 3/6 6-max player and there were several experiences mid limit players still on the board.

Capt.: Bugstud
1(06): Tosh
2(15): Jason Strasser
3(26): StinkyPete
4(35): Etizzle
5(46): Tom Collins

Pre-season Ranking: 4th

Comments: Bugstud's 1st round pick is deeply puzzling. Tosh has had success in past HULAs, but he is coming off a 5 month absence from poker. Many thought him to be retired. Overall, a poor choice with ALL1N still on the board.

Bugstud's 2nd round selection of Jason Strasser is intriguing. Strasser is an exceptional NL player who is known to tackle the HU NL freeze-outs on Pokerstars. Strasser is a good selection and likely to pay dividends if he can translate his HU NL experience to Limit holdem. In the 3rd round, Bugstud selects StinkyPete and obtains one of the best values in the draft so far. StinkyPete is a tenacious/aggressive shorthanded player and his style translates well to HU play.

Capt.: Sthief09
1(07): Jeff W
2(14): MPerich
3(27): Maxx
4(34): Surfbullet
5(47): Victor

Pre-season Ranking: 3rd

Comments: Jeff W is a safe pick at #7 overall. He is widely respected for his mathematical approach and his sound fundamental play. Sthief hopes that he can gear up his aggression for Heads-up play.

Sthief follows up his solid first round selection with good value in round 2. MPerich is a top 10/20 6-max veteran and he is poised to succeed in HU play. Sthief's selection of Maxx in round 3 is safe if uninspiring. Maxx is one of the best 3-4 values still on the board and should be a solid contributor.

Capt.: Johnny Boom Boom
1(08): J.R.
2(13): Wheelz
3(28): Tolbiny
4(33): lmn55d
5(48): BigBaitSim

Pre-season Ranking: 7th

Comments: JBB selects the elusive J.R. with the 8th overall pick. J.R. is a legend on the 2+2 forums. Not much is known of his play, but he should be a strong player if his posts are any indication.

JBB makes decent value picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds with his selections of fast-rising 10/20 6-maxer Wheelz and long-term 5/10 terror Tolbiny.

Capt.: MEBenhoe
1(09): Trix
2(12): Aces McGee
3(29): Joe826
4(32): Kurosh
5(49): wrto4556

Pre-season Ranking: 6th

Comments: MEBenhoe is calling out the other HULA captains with accusations of poor drafting. MEBenhoe used the strategy of selecting players who went 5-1 in past HULAs. He believes that this strategy will propel his team to victory over the less-informed.

This publication believes the MEBenhoe's hubris will be his downfall. MEBenhoe passed up better values to select players who conform to his rigid evaluation system. In the 1st round, MEBenhoe passed up ALL1N for Trix-a 30/60 HU and 3-handed specialist. In round 2, MEBenhoe passed up players like Jason Strasser, Danenania and King Yao to select Aces McGee--a 3/6 player whose specialty is full ring games.

MEBenhoe makes up for his mediocre drafting in the first two rounds with his excellent value picks in the 3rd and 4th round. Joe826 is a long-term HUSH poster who has also had success in HULA. Kurosh is one of the best value picks in the draft--he is a dangerous and arrogant player who has matched himself with the best in the world at high limit HU games on UB. Unfortunately for him, his best traits led to a catastrophic fall to the 4th round.

Time will tell if MEBenhoe's strategy is sound, but this publication recommends that you bet against him.

Capt.: NLSoldier
1(10): ALL1N
2(11): Klepton
3(30): Rounder04
4(31): girgy44
5(50): Baronzeus

Pre-season Ranking: 2nd

Comments: NLSoldier's #1 selection is one of the best value picks in the entire draft. ALL1N was ranked as the #5 overall player in the draft and he is a tremendous HU and 3-handed specialist who is experienced w/ the BB=button structure of HULA 3.

NLSoldier's 2nd round selection is solid. Klepton is known for his full ring game play and excellent advice in the SS forum, but he is an experienced, solid mid limit player and NLSoldier could have done worse.

NLSoldier selects two unknowns in the 3rd and 4th round. My sources say that both of these players are notorious 30/60 players. If this is true, then NLSoldier's team will be very tough to beat and should rival Evan's for best in league.

Best Value Picks by Round

1: ALL1N (NLSoldier)
2: Danenania (Evan)
3: StinkyPete (BugStud)
4: Kurosh (MEBenhoe)
5: Victor (Sthief09)

Worst Value Picks by Round

1: Tosh (BugStud)
2: Entity (GuyOnTilt)
3: MarkL44 (GuyOnTilt)
4: Belloc (rmarotti)
5: Tom Collins (bugstud)

Thanks to Cnfuzzd for the Unofficial Draft Manuscript.

Just a comment on my picks:

1. Trix is an absolute beast
2. I played Aces McGee last year in HULA. I've played a lot of people heads up, and that match with Aces ranks as the 2nd hardest match I've played. #1 being against Schneids. I had Aces targeted as my 2nd round pick from the beginning, and likely the only way I wouldn't have taken him is if I could've gotten Tosh in the 1st round and Trix in the 2nd. Then I would've hoped he was still available in the 3rd.

I went into the draft planning on taking 2 of the 3 of Tosh, Trix, and Aces McGee with my first two picks. Taking Kurosh in the 4th round, and taking the best available player in the 3rd round. So in reality I think I had a perfect draft, as in my mind I got 4 players who should all have been picked in the first 2 rounds.

One more thing, you put too much emphasis on what limit someone is playing to determine what their skill level will be in HULA.
