Re: Eric Gregg Dies
He was a good guy and a lot of fun if you ever spent any time in his bar. It is sad to see him die so young, but he was huge.
I think he got a bad rap as an umpire. He may not have had the "best" strike zone. But it was the same no matter who you were. I always laugh when Braves fans complain because Glavine and Maddux lived off of Gregg and guys with strike zones like his. |

Re: Eric Gregg Dies
In his honor they should have his casket be two feet wider than it's supposed to be.

He was a good man and raised a good family. I know his son personally from playing baseball with him in college. Its a very sad day. I hope he can be remember for his personality and good humor, not for his size. |

It wasn't a cheap shot. He was known for consistently having an overly large strike zone. I'm sure the players adjusted accordingly and it evened itself out over time, although the 1997 NLCS could be what he's most remembered for as a result. |

Re: Eric Gregg Dies
I felt like an [censored], but this didn't make me sad.
It just reminded me of the hurbris involved in being publically horrible at your job, quitting to make a point and then getting outraged when your resignation was accepted. Yeah, it's sad Greg died, but he was a [censored] umpire and that's really my only frame of reference for him. |

Re: Eric Gregg Dies
Always sad to see someone die young. I've heard he was a good guy. But he was an awful umpire.

Re: Eric Gregg Dies
I was at the last game of the 1994 season with the Expos at the Mets. The game meant nothing to either team. Eric Gregg was behind the plate. The players on both teams knew if it was caught by the catcher it was a strike. It was a very fast game.
