Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
OK so heres the deal, my mom won a WSOP main event ticket worth $11,000. It was a drawing and they picked her name and she knows nothing at all about Texas Holdem. Well she has played like twice (she bareley knows what beats what) me on the other hand has been playing texas holdem tourneys and cash games for 4+ years now. I dont know where to start to teach her before the main even which is in about a month. Does anyone have any suggestions? I recently finished dan harringtons books but i think even those are to advanced for her. If she got all in preflop in the main event as a 35% dog or better that would be good for her. thanks

Re: Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
Teach her the basics, what beats what etc... Have her 'sweat' you online, watch how you play, etc...
And for her tournament strategy, I'd recommend - Blair Rodman's and Lee Nelson's Kill Phil. |

Re: Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
Your mom is almost the exact situation that David Sklansky writes to in his book Tournament Poker (for advanced Players). Read the chapter titled The "System".
It is basically an All-in approach once the blinds start. The "system" has been updated to handle the situation of when you are posting blinds but I don't have a reference for where that was published. |

Buy the book "Kill Phil" and practice the strategy online before the ME.

Re: Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
Before Kill Phil, you need to teach her:
1) what beats what 2) how Hold 'em works other ideas: 1) have her sweat you on some deep stack tournaments and explain why you're doing what you're doing 2) have her enter a local casino tournament or two so she's used to handling chips, etc 3) haver her play a couple of deep stack tournies on line 4) have her enter a lower buy in event at the WSOP so that the ME is not her first ever event |

Re: Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
bonk your mom over the head and take her ticket.
if that doesn't work, she won't get in the money, which is okay. Teach her some things so that she can have some fun. Don't overwhelm her. The trouble with the all-in strategy is that she might be out in 1 or 2 hands. Find out how long she wants to play and teach her a strategy that will allow her to achieve that (one day only -- LAG it up. more than one day -- tight). |

Re: Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
Start with the basics and have her read Harrington. After this I would suggest having her sweat you a little online and play a few deep stack tournaments herself with you there to give her advice.

Re: Entry in WSOP main event I NEED HELP
alot of the most amateurish mistakes are:
a. playing too many hands b. calling too much i would pick a tight somewhat aggressive(not super aggressive) strategy over the all in. why not get her to play a few online tourneys (probably p stars because they have antes). or alot of online tourneys. not necessarily the deep stack ones because those take way too long and are actually deeper than the WSOP. |
