Default What\'s better?

OK, what's better:
1. Vodka and Grapefruit Juice, maybe some tonic water, ice, etc.
or
2. Gin and Grapefruit... ?

Seems like gin is better because the alliteration, but maybe taste should be involved? Hmmm...

Mostly I just want to know what tastes OK and has few calories. Something nice by the pool...

I'm sick of Cosmos. I like Tom Collins and Vodka Collins. I have nothing against hard alcohol...

Gin & tonics are great for summertime. Vodka tonics are fine in a pinch.

I do think that if you're concerned about your calorie intake, you should forget about alcohol.

Vodka and lemonade is an excellent outside by-the-pool drink. Gin and lemonade is also a good one (which I guess you kinda know, given the Tom Collins thing).

My girlfriend drinks cheap vodka and Crystal Light. Low cost, low calorie count.

On the grapefruit idea, raspberry-flavored vodka mixes well with Fresca.

What's funny is all these are vodka ideas, yet I rarely drink vodka myself.

Gin and tonic with a healthy squeeze of fresh lime is the best out by the pool drink for me. Don't go with cheap gin, it's really nasty. Good brands in the $20-25/750mL price range (NB, I have no idea about Nevada booze prices): Citadelle, Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray 10.

I'm also a big fan of Hendricks, though I serve that with fresh cucumber slices rather than the lime, as the gin is infused with cucumber. I like 3-5 wafer thin slices floated in the drink and a nice thick slice on the rim of the glass.

Virtually any drink that tastes good when made with gin will taste OK when made with vodka, so the only question is, "Do gin and grapefruit juice belong together?" I think it'll work fine, but there's only one way to find out for sure . I'd try out 1.5 oz gin, 3-5 oz of grapefruit juice, and a splash of soda water (I don't think tonic would be as good w/ the juice). Once you've tried that out, you can try adjusting the proportions as your tastebuds dictate.

Another good drink that might be up your alley is called a Gin Buck. Take a shot of gin, and pour it over ice in a glass. Squeeze two quarters of lime into the glass and drop them in. Fill the glass with ginger ale. I'm not even the biggest ginger ale guy, but with the lime and the gin this drink is great.

Wookie - sounds delish! I love ginger ale. I even like ginger by its self (I will eat it with my sushi, not just in between to cleanse my palate).

MCS - I'm up for your g/f's choice, but I don't think many bars have crystal light. At home, though, I'll give it a shot.

Andy - what's wrong with grapefruit juice? It's refreshing in the summertime.

Oh, I was answering strictly for home consumption.

She doesn't even always use name-brand Crystal Light.

I dunno, I just find grapefruit repulsive year-round. It's odd, because I really like oranges, lemons, and limes.

I'm going to have to give this one a try. Maybe I'll try it with ginger beer, too.
