Hypothetical involving school shootings...
The thread about someone having a gun in school made me think of this, possibly while high. Ok, you are in a classroom and you hear over the loudspeaker that someone in the school has a gun and to begin emergency proceedures. Shortly after, you hear shots and screaming from close by, then the armed gunman comes in bearing a rifle. The gunman takes a shot at the teacher, but misses. At this point, a kid who is normally in your class takes a handgun out of his backpack and delivers a fatal blow to the chest of the assailant. If it matters, let's assume that the classmate is on some form of sports team, is not a trouble maker, but seems somewhat homie-esque.
What would be your thoughts on the classmate with the gun, and what do you think the media's portrayal of him would be? Does it matter whether the original assailant has killed anyone? Would charges be brought against the supposed hero? |

Re: Hypothetical involving school shootings...
The kid would be expelled from the school and be required to serve a significant amount of probation time, but he would be seen as a hero in the community. Media would go apeshit about cracking down on guns in schools.

It'd be somewhat like Boondock Saints I guess. Big controversy about whether he is a hero or not. He'd most likely be punished but looked at as a hero at the same time.

I've never seen Boondock Saints. Is my idea not original? Crap, and it sounded so interesting too...

Re: Hypothetical involving school shootings...
Boondock Saints is just some [censored] movie about irish vigilantes.
He would be portrayed as a hero in the media and community. It doesnt matter if the assailent has killed anyone thanks to your discription of him shooting at the teacher and missing. He would likely get probation and be expelled for having a gun in school, any other charges would never stick. |

Re: Hypothetical involving school shootings...
I was a senior at a nearby highschool when Columbine went down. I knew teachers who actually supported having more guns in school for this very reason.

I think this question might be even more interesting if the classmate was not a non-troublemaker but instead a known gang member and discipline problem.

Put a screenplay together and I guarantee it gets made. Joseph Gordon Levitt to star. Just kidding about that part, but not the first part. If you know anyone who is a writer, I'd get to work on this. |
