Default HS Senior Take-Home Final

Ugh, so my nextdoor neighbor comes over in a panic telling me if he does not have this crap done by tomorrow he isn't going to graduate. I tell him I cannot complete this without a graphing calculator, plus I haven't done this [censored] in years anyway. Your mission, OOT, should you choose to accept it, is to complete these high school algebra problems:

1) The wing chill index gives you an idea of how cold it feels outside when the wind wincreases the rate of heat loss from your skin. The index is the equivalent temperature that would have the same cooling effect if the wind velocity were only 6km/hour. When the wind velocity is less than 100 kn/hr, an equeation for wind chill W (in degrees Celsuis), based on temperature T ( in degrees Celsius) and wind velocity v (in km/hr), is:

w = 33 - (0.0393)(33 - T)(12.36 + 6.13 root v - 0.32v)

a) suppose T = 4 degrees and v = 40 km/hr. Find W
b) Suppose W = -15 degrees and v = 20 km/hr. Find T

2. A manufacturer of packaging materials makes open top boxes by cutting an x in. by x in. square from each corner of an 18 in. by 24 in. piece of cardboard.

a) write an equation giving the volume V of the box as a function of x.

b) Use your graphing calculator to find the value of x that maximizes the volume of the box. What is the maximum volume?

3) A concert hall has seating for 800 people. There are 21 seats in the first row. Each of the other rows has two more seats than the row in front of it. How many rows are in the concert hall? How many seats are in the last row?

4) For the arithmetic sequence 6, 14, 22, 30....

a) find the 200th term of the sequence
b) find the some of the first 900 terms.

5) Suppose you want to estimate the height of a several-hundred-year-old redwood in a forest in California. The angle of elevation is 82.4 degrees from a point 35 feet from the base of the tree. How tall is the redwood?

6) Write the equation of a sine function that has the following attributes:

a) Its maximum value is 7
b) its minimum value is -1
c) it passes through the points (2,3) and (5,3)

Please graph your function showing at least two periods.

7. Sold the following equation:

2r_____5 (take out the _____)
----- + ----- = 4
r - 1 _ r + 5

8. In triangle ABC, angle E measures 70 degrees.
DE = 12.5cm
FE = 6.8cm

Find the length of FD.

Show all your work.

Disclaimer: If you don't want to do this, don't. I told him he was an idiot for waiting until the very last minute and not knowing how to do it anyway, but he is a family friend.

Hm...I was hoping it'd be easier, and I'd feel smart. Also keep in mind the "or I won't graduate" line seems to only happen in the movies. If you hear it in real life, the person saying it is just being dramatic.

No, this is a required class that he will have to take in the summer to receive his diploma if he fails the final. Fwiw #4 is pretty easy.

"Graphing calculator?"

Goddamn...my first calculator was an APF 4-function with LEDs that ran on a 9-volt battery.

The only one I can do without a calculator or any effort...

4a) a200=6+(22x8)
210

Edit: Some of these can be solved with noeffort at all would solve these if you are not braindead. Even if you dont know how to do sequences, number 3 can be done in two minutes just by addition.

Edit number 2 I remember 4b. The formula is number of terms/2 times the sum of the first and last term.

Finding the 900th term can be found by 6+(899x8) which I think is 7198.
