I just got a job writing articles for a new poker magazine headed by Jonny Chan. It's still in the very early stages, but they asked me to come up with ideas for interesting articles.
This is not going to be 2+2ish articles, (i.e. good game theory or strategy advice...) but they want entertaining articles and I hate most of the crap that is put out today. I dont particularly expect this to be too much better than the others, but I'd at least like my articles to be in some way relevant, while still entertaining. My ideas thus far: Review of the side programs. Pokertracker, poker ace, etc... Hardware stuff, this magazine focuses mainly on Online poker, so I thought an article reviewing monitors, video cards, etc might be good. Interviews of the bigname/noname internet pro's that make a good living but are unknown to most of the world. Thoughts? |

Hi Crimson:
Whatever your topic, I think the key is to write with some depth and detail. That's lacking in virtually everything I read in these magazines. Also, I had heard that Chan was getting in the magazine business. It will be interesting to see how he does. The field is very crowded. Best wishes, Mason |

I opened one and took this "are you a shark quiz" one of the questions was what are the odds of a flush draw hitting, another one was how often do you get AA? I closed the magazine and smiled. The guy sitting next to me(on a deadspread) got 4 out of 20 questions right. He was playing in the 10k WPT event. Seriously, keep things this way. |

I'd like to see the following things in a new poker magazine:
-Full blown pages of poker site ads with half naked airbrushed models. -Mug shots of random $500 tournament winners with 5 o'clock shadow at small casinos dispersed throughout the country. -Have a known poker theorist invent words and terminology every article that pertain to nothing. -At least a few overpriced European watch ads that take up an entire page. -Articles about new world-class celebrity poker players and what sites they sponsor. -Reviews of poker sites, their daily tournaments and bonus codes. I'd leave out any strategic articles in your magazine. You don't want to stand out from the crowd in the magazine business. If you follow the above formula you'll fit right in. |

The interviews with the bigname/noname internet pro's would be awesome. If you could interview guys like Prahlad, Erik Sagstrom, and others about how they built their way up in the poker world it would be great.
