Default Question about Commerce area

Hi-

Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Feel free to move it to a better place.

I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a decent area around the Commerce to live for a month or two (or maybe a year).

A furnished place would be ideal. Even an extended stay hotel. I'm a little bit of a snob when it comes to hotels and neighborhoods. How snobby could I get if I were only looking to spend up to 2k/month and hopefully not more than that? A little less than that would be ideal.

I know traffic in and around LA can be brutal, so I'd like to remain relatively close to the Commerce at no more than 20 minutes by car. Is that even possible? -lol. But I know nothing of the areas around there. I know the Commerce itself is in like an industrial area or something. Any decent areas around there? I'd appreciate any info. Thanks.

For 2k a month you can get a nice place in a mediocre neighborhood or a mediocre place in a nice neighborhood.

I think I'd prefer a mediocre place in a nice neighborhood. But is there a nice neighborhood in Commerce or close to it? If not, how bad are they? Being close is more important than nice neighborhood (unless it's really bad). Thanks.

It's definitely not in the middle of rich LA. It's not even technically LA. It's Commerce CA.

i gotta fly out there and check it out, but the sole purpose for getting a place in LA is to play full time poker at the commerce. driving a half hour to the casino really sucks so if i can live within biking distance or something that would be sweet.

Ok, once again, everyone on this board blows up stuff beyond reasonable proportion.

Really, its all going to depend on you and what your definition of good neighborhood is. But this is the most realistic appraisal of the area.

Commerce: Ok, Commerce itself is not great. There is a residential area on the other side of the 5 freeway from Commerce, each side of Washington Bl. Frankly, if it were me, I would not mind living there short term. But its not a great neighborhood...definitely blue collar latino. So lots of people are not wanting to live there. Really, its like much of LA...and area built immediately after WWII that gradually went from all caucasian to nearly all latino. You can probably get a small house here that is in decent shape for $1200-1500 a month. You don't want to walk around after 9pm or so, but thats true of a lot of areas in Los Angeles.
5 minute drive to Commerce. 10 minutes to Bike

Downey: Wow, it really depends here. Nice areas, and really crappy areas. I bet you can find something easy in your price range...maybe even a guest house in a mansion sized house in a nice neighborhood. You would have to go here first and look. This is also probably the best place to look for an extended stay place. There might be ads in craigslist. 10-15 minute drive to Commerce. 15 minute drive to Bike.

Whittier: Well, lots of nice places here and lots of condos as well. A few sketchy parts, but mostly nice & middle class. Maybe even you can find something near Whittier College(private college with lots of hotties with wealthy parents). That would probably serve your needs well. 20-25 minute drive to Commerce.

Montebello: South Montebello borders Commerce. South Montebello sucks badly. Montebello north of Beverly Bl east of Wilcox Ave is a decent area. Montebello is mostly a latino area. The area north of Beverly is mixed asian/latino and is upper middle class. You might be able to find a guest room or house here(there are a few mansion sized places in the hills). 10 minutes down Garfield Ave to Commerce. I grew up near here. People are going to tell you it's ghetto. It's not. It's exactly as I described.

Monterey Park: Mixed asian/latino...mostly asian. Nice middle class area with a few huge houses in the hills above Atlantic Bl. Lots of condos. A few sketchy areas east of Atlantic and north of Garvey...and also on the Rosemead border. I think you might have best luck finding a place here. $1500 might get you a furnished 2-3 bedroom condo. 20 minute drive in traffic to Commerce.

Alhambra: Same as Monterey Park, but nicer. Prices aren't really any higher. I have friends who live in a nice 2 bedroom apt with garage that pay $1050 a month. I can almost guarantee you will have no problem finding a place here that you like. Commerce is 15 minute drive w/no traffic, 30 minutes with traffic(Atlantic Bl to 10 fwy to 710 fwy to 5 fwy exit washington.)

Pasadena: Nice area except the northwest part near altadena and john muir hs. Really trendy parts and if nightlife is important, there are lots of apartments along Old Town Pasadena and Colorado Bl. More expensive than any of the other listed places. Expect a normal 30-40 minute drive to Commerce.
