Whats the main reason a lot of online players play at 6 max tables?

1/2 right.

by definition it is far more variance. but, you get to use your superior (hopefully) skills vs. weak opponents more (more hands-which obviously leads to higher variance)

Relative hand strength increases which translates to much more action (more fun)
