Question (Low in the hole)
OK, at my regular game tonight, we played a round of low in the hole roll your own. For those who don't know the game, it is seven-card stud, except that you get each of your cards down and choose which one to put face up (except for the last one, which stays down, of course). Also, the lowest of your hole cards is wild. Aces can be high or low.
So, at showdown, one player shows four jacks, and the other player shows (Tc Th Ac) 3c 5c 8d Qh. We were unsure whether the hand should be ruled an A-5 straight flush or ruled just an Ace high flush, as the Ace had been called high and could not also be low to make the straight flush. I don't think there is an official rule in a wild card game like this, but what do you think is more reasonable? |

Re: Question (Low in the hole)
My understanding is that the ace is called high just so you know which card is wild, not to limit how it can be used.

Re: Question (Low in the hole)
My regular home game has always played it as "aces in the hole are ALWAYS HIGH...". So, in your example, the 2 T's would be wild.

Re: Question (Low in the hole)
I've always played ace is always high in the hole for this sort of game also. However, in that sort of game, that would be considered an A-5 straight flush. So I don't see that calling the ace high in order to make the tens wild would change anything.

Re: Question (Low in the hole)
I apparantly misunderstood your rules 'cuz I don't see any sort of a flush in that guys hand.

I'm pretty sure it is played this way is the vast majority of "low in the hole" type games. Regardless, the statement that "you don't get 2 wild cards cause they're the same rank" is wrong. We are talking about home games, and whatever the home game rule is obviously goes. |

Just another reason not to play games like this.
