Most unlikely career -- Robin Williams vs. Tom Hanks?
(Obviously inspired by the Crystal vs. Williams poll)
Both are good actors. Both are guys I find incredibly squirrely. Which successful acting career is has been the most unlikely given their early roles? Tom Hanks has gone from being co-star of Bosom Buddies to back-to-back Oscars. Robin Williams went from starring in Mork & Mindy to winning an Oscar for Good Will Hunting after three previous nominations. |

Re: Most unlikely career -- Robin Williams vs. Tom Hanks?
GH, I voted Kip but it's basically a tie. Mostly because Tom Hanks (and certainly Kevin Costner) suck possibly as much or more as Crystal and Williams. They all made a decent movie or two early in their career, gave good face, and rode that to millions.
If I was them I'm sure I'd do the same thing, but it doesn't stop me from hating them. |

I can't believe this is close. Robin Williams - very funny. Tom Hanks - marginally talented. From his early work Hanks could have easily ended up being Steve Gutenberg.

I went with Mork because he was basically a coked out comedian who Im shocked survived this long....
and I wish Kip never mad it as I miss him in comedies like Turner & Hooch, Dragnet, Bachelor Party, and now he takes himself too seriously to jump into that genre again... ...and it looks like his face is melting off |

I think my hatred really started with that retarded HBO special where he wore the gigantic baggy plastic pants. Very unfunny. |

Gunny - do you also hate George Carlin?

Exactly. I'm basing my opinion on Williams' actual talent - coked up 80's comedy. Sitcoms all suck.

Re: Most unlikely career -- Robin Williams vs. Tom Hanks?
The jump from tv to the big screen is not generally a success (see Jennifer Aniston as exhibit A). The leap from Kip to Philadelphia is nothing short of astounding.
Of course the leap from coked out Live at the Met RW to GWH serious actor role is pretty phenomenal as well. But I voted Hanks as most unlikely. Why the hate for Hanks as an actor? He's a hell of lot better than Costner. TUQ's opinion becomes less and less relevant with every post I read today. ~FishNChips |
