Hmmmm.... I might be a hypersensitive Internets nerb. I'm always bothered when people call be dude. I don't mind bro though. I always call people bro. Specifically because I don't want to disrespect them by calling them dude.

It would have to depend on whoever you are calling dude, and what the circumstances are.

Generally, dude is not derogatory, but it could be disrespectful. (When meeting new GF's father, or meeting a prospective employer.)
