Since I take quite a few prescription medicines daily, I was curious what if anything you all take on a daily basis. I'm prescribed all of these medicines in association with a work injury from last year that I've already had two surgeries to attempt to correct. This isnt a scientific study, not for a paper...just satisfying the curiosity of someone with too much time on his hands.
stuff I take daily: Lyrica - a neurological pain management medication that I take to combat nerve damage in my hand from an operation I had. This drug is also used to treat certain types of seizures, but I dont take it for that. This drug is also used to help me sleep thru the night. I take four 75mg gelcaps daily. Elavil - this drug is also a multi-purpose drug like Lyrica. Elavil is used to treat depression, aid in sleeping, and alleviate certain causes of pain. I take it for all three reasons with one caveat - I'm not depressed, the doc wants me to take this to prevent depression from setting in. I take one 50mg tablet one hour before bed. Avinza - this is a controlled-release morphine pill. Obviously (I would think) this pill is solely used to alleviate severe pain. I take one 90mg gelcap daily. Norco - this is a hydrocodone tablet, in the family of Vicodin, Lortab, Codeine, etc. Norco is the "extra strength" version of this family - so says my doc anyways. This medication is also taken purely to alleviate pain. I take 2 tablets every 4 hours up to a max of 10 per day. The dosage of my particular tablets is 10/325 - 10mg hydrocodone and 325mg acetaminophen. I also take a GNC daily multi-vitamin and GNC Omega fish oil gelcaps, but that's pretty ordinary. cliff notes: I have a long standing work injury that I'm still getting treatment for. I take a whole bunch of high-powered painkillers. I'd like to know what the rest of OOT takes on a daily basis. |

[/ QUOTE ] If your doctor told you that Norco is the "extra-strength version" of this family, then he is full of [censored]. Norco and Vicodin and contain the same two ingredients, hydrocodone and acetaminophen. The only differences are the dosages of the various components. Vicodins come with 500 mg acetaminophen (same as an extra strength tylenol) and Norcos come with 325 mg acetaminophen (same as a regular tylenol). Lortab is also the same combo, but I've never prescribed it. (Norco is my hospital's formulary choice, but I usually use Vicodins in outpatients because it is cheaper.) You can give Norcos in (at least) 5, 7.5 and 10 mg of hydrocodone. (Same with Vicodins.) Doc might have said that you were getting the Extra-Strength Norcos. Or he might have fed you a line of bull, hoping that his "extra-strength" line would give you a bit of extra effect from suggestion (which I've now destroyed...sorry). There are two main reasons why Norcos (and the others) mix acetaminophen with the hydrocodone. First is that the tylenol is a useful adjuvant pain medication. Anyone with chronic musculoskeletal pain requiring opioid pain control should also be on a nonsteroidal or tylenol if tolerated (depending on liver/kidney function). To answer you actual question: I take a daily proton pump inhibitor (protonix) for my horrible acid reflux. Worked until up to 6 weeks ago. At that point in time, I increased to twice a day and then doubled my dosage as well, still with no help. I then got an upper endoscopy and 48 hour pH study. Not curretnly having reflux according to the study, so I'm going back to my normal dose of proton pump inhibitor and adding a gastric coating med called sucralfate until I can have a gastric emptying study. (All this expensive workup is of course covered by insurance, and I get to schedule the tests for whenever I want...good to be friends with the specialist docs and have great insurance. Highlights the inadequacies of our current healthcare arrangement in this US, however.) |
