Default Ping poll

This was mentioned in shant's thread and made me curious...

'OK, ping me later this week to figure out weekend plans.'

Who here uses ever uses the word ping in this context, meaning to contact or get in touch with?

I've never used it but at my old (techie) job, my managers used it all the time. None of us "underlings" did.

You ping ip addresses to see if there's a computer there to respond to your ping.

I ping computers on occasion, but I've never used it in the context you refer to.
