\"Game o Shadows\" authors refuse to reveal sources, may face jail time.
The authors of "Game of Shadows" refuse to reveal to a federal grand jury their confidential sources used in putting together the material for their book, and could face possible fines and jail time as a result of failing to cooperate with investigations.
One has to wonder if they are so confident in what they have written as being true, why they are now refusing to reveal their sources to the federal grand jury that is investigating the matter. Seems to me like their speculation was ONLY good enough for the "court of public opinion", but they themselves fear its scrutiny in the Court of Law. They were overzealous in their accusations against Bonds outside of the courtroom, but given the chance to testify under oath to a grand jury investigating, they all of a sudden clam up and don't want to talk. One has to wonder why, and it makes you question their previous credibility. Interesting indeed, after they are the ones that leveled all the charges at Bonds, that they themselves may be the ones looking at the inside of a jail cell while Bonds continues circling the basepaths. Looks as if the accusers are actually the ones that have been breaking the law all along! Ironic, indeed! |

I love how you criticize "the sports media" and anti bonds people for being biased and then turn around and present a litany of the most one sided posts possible.

It is not against the law to publish leaked grand jury testimony. It's immoral, but it's not against the law. The person who has to be nervous right now is leaker of the testimony. That guy should be sent to jail. The authors and Phil Bronstein, editor of the SF Chronicle, are getting all sanctimonious about First Amendment BS. There is no freedom of speach issue here. The real issue is one of due process for Bonds since his grand jury testimony is supposed to be secret.

[ QUOTE ]
One has to wonder if they are so confident in what they have written as being true, why they are now refusing to reveal their sources to the federal grand jury that is investigating the matter. [/ QUOTE ] This has nothing to do with the truth of the Book or its sources. The writers didn't break the law, and the request has nothing to do with the veracity of their sources. It is illegal to make public grand jury testimony whcih has been sealed - but once it is released, it is not illegal to report about the contents of the testimony, as it is in the public domain. The Government is trying to find out who leaked the transcript, and the authors, as journalists, are standing up and protecting their sources, claiming whistleblowers won't come to journalists if confidentiality can not be guaranteed. Judith Miller of the NYT took a similar position regarding the leak of Valerie Plame's name. The problem for the authors is that they have no constitutional right to withhold this info (some limited arguments under CA law may apply in federal court, and some federal court decisions suggest some protection for journalists), so unless they testify they are in contmept of court and can be jailed. Read this. |

[/ QUOTE ] I know you love Barry Bonds. But that hardly excuses the blatant stupidity of this statement. If it's not true, if none of the allegations in the book are true, why aren't Bonds, Conte, Montgomery, Jones and everyone else suing the writers and everyone associated with the book and the San Francisco Chronicle? |
