Default How do I deal with LA street gangs?

My buddy and I just got in LA today. I saw a CNN special about street gangs in LA while I was unpacking.

I posted a 1st day trip report over in B&M http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showfl...e=0#Post5723184

Anyway, I had a quick encounter with a gang member outside the bicycle club. We were walking back to the hotel from TBC (its across the street, like 100 yards tops. The street is really busy tons of people, middle of day.) The gang member is just being real sketchy, kinda waits on us to pass, then follows us a few steps, then hangs out.

I imagine he was either A. selling drugs, B. diddn't have [censored] to do and was just hanging out, C. Considering robbing us.

Probably most likely order being B, A, C. With C a distant 3rd.

However, its not something I want to experience alone at 3 am with 5k in my pocket.

I'll get a box, so money shouldn't be a problem.

I guess I can alter my day to not walk back at 3 am, but that kinda sucks. I can probably get security to walk me out to the side walk?

Anyway, real question is.

If I walk by 1 gang member by himself in a sketchy area with nobody around at some point in the future should I..

A. Give him a cordial, "excuse me."
B. Throw out a, "whats up?" as I walk by.
c. Keep my head down and walk quickly past.

Ok, what if it is 5 gang members and again sketchy area nobody around..

A. Give him a cordial, "excuse me."
B. Throw out a, "whats up?" as I walk by.
c. Keep my head down and walk quickly past.

Question that doesn't help you #1: You're staying in Bell Gardens? Why?

Question that doesn't help you #2: How do you know he's a street gang member?

Well as for the gang issue, I'm still kinda wondering as if it was a true gang member or not. There are numerous people that in order to try to obtain "insta cred" get tatted in a manner conducive with that of gang members. However, when it really comes down to it, although they may affiliate with a group that claims to be a "gang" they actually aren't "bangers" or anything even close. More like just hoodlums that want to seem "hard". Regardless though, dont say "whats up?"... this can be misconstrued as being confrontational and challenging. Best just to avoid their path.
If you're really worried about the money thing, keep a small amount in your pocket/wallet and tape the rest to yourself underneath your boxers for the walk to your hotel (you can just stop by the bathroom on your way out). Then, if you do get rolled, just give the assailants the money in your pocket/wallet.

I get a kick out of this one every time. I think crypt-walking was what Michael Jackson did in the Thriller video.

Answer 1) Online it was cheapest hotel for the stuff we needed. Internet, fridge near casinos. Whats wrong with staying in bell gardens? I dont know bell gardens from any other place. Never been here before.

2) Just his dress and tats on his neck/face, and loitering. Very likely could be a poser, but seemed sketchy.

I like how you refer to it as "getting rolled"

How do you know so much about gangs? Any other insights?

thanks
