Default Ok, so... The Monkeys ?

someone old please answer me this: are The Monkeys pretty much just a shameless ripoff of the Beatles or were they talented in their own right? Were they popular during their time? What was the general feeling regarding their music?

The Monkees were ripoffs...but they eventually did play their own instruments and write their own material. Their show was pretty popular in the 60's. I don't think anybody would consider their songs to be revolutionary or anything. But considering they were a TV creation...they did alright.

They made a couple of really good pop songs.

They were a rip-off of the Beatles insofar as they didn't make a couple dozen really good pop songs, but the people that wrote the songs and put together the band did better than most.

they were made for TV, by TV. amusing. Not serious music.
though several of them became pretty good muscians and writers.
You should probably only compare them to the Beatles by the length of their hair however.

They were the live-action version of the Beatles cartoons. With worse music.

So to answer the original question, they were the shameless ripoff of the worst part of the Beatles' repertoire. They did have some catchy tunes, and filled the void after the Beatles stopped touring in the US.

I've seen their show a few times. I actually thought it was pretty interesting to watch - kind of a different style.

I think they sang "I'm a Believer" that was remade by Smashmouth(?).

Few weird Monkee trivia bits...

They started a tour opening for Hendrix..I don't think it lasted too long.

Charles Manson tried out for the Monkees.

Mike Nesmith's mom invented WhiteOut.
