Default No Car Insurance?

Anyone know what the penalty for being caught w/o car insurance is (ie you get pulled over for ignoring traffic signal).

Also how about if someone hits your car, or you hit their car? I was hoping at least in the former situation, there's no penalty. Anyone know?

In Louisiana they take your licence plate, revoke your registration and fine you. It doesn't make any difference how they find out (your fault or someone elses). Its a major pain. The law is there for a reason, go get some insurance.

..after I get a car.

I'll spend my time driving through PA or NJ, so I guess I need to look up those laws. If it's just a fine, then I think it might not be worth having insurance, seeing how I'll driving like twice/month. I just don't want to go to jail.

It is completly irresponsbile to drive at all without insurance. You'll lose everything you have if you hurt someone badly without insurance.

[/ QUOTE ] Can you guys expound on this part? Do you guys mean I'll be sued and lose? I don't actually have any assets. Does this also apply if it was the other guys fault?

Edit: For the record, I do have insurance, but I am also curious about this.

I found this site where you can get more information. This may help you, and I'd also highly suggest you get insurance. It's just part of being a responsible person & also it's not worth saving some money for an accident that could seriously damage your life.

I know most insurance is paid every 6 months. My friend has a car that he only uses in the good weather, so he only has it insured for half the year.

If you have an older car and you are really just looking for the cheapest insurance, just take off collision, fire, theft, etc. and go with the bare minimum.
