Re: Govt bans metal bats
Two points:
1) the OP never used the word "federal". 2) the linked article doesn't say anything that implies the ban is limited to public schools. |

I think we can safely assume that the ordinance covers every single aluminum bat in NYC and that that all of the now-banned bats are being dumped into the East River as we speak. |

[/ QUOTE ] Well it applies to high school baseball games. Obviously if private schools could use metal bats against public schools that would be a huge advantage. But the law, at least from my reading of the article, does not affect anything other than high school games. |

[/ QUOTE ] 1) what's your point 2) what's your point City councils have already acted to restrict activity that endangers health -- smoking in buildings, cell phones while driving, etc. So long as these decisions are at the local level, it's not so much an issue -- people have far greater ability to influence local politics, hold those accountable, or move to another town (and even retain the same job). If a homeowner's association banned aluminum bats at its park, I doubt nate's outcry would be similar. |

Re: Govt bans metal bats
The city government can tell public high schools what to do if they want to, especially with regards to safety issues.

Re: Govt bans metal bats
I don't understand the hullabo. The city council passed the ban. A local government made the decision. The federal government upheld the rulling. If people there aren't happy with it, they have themselves to blame for electing their local reps.

linky Do they know no bounds? The government has decided to step in and tell the high school baseball teams what kind of bats they can use. In all seriously, who could possibly believe that this is the proper role of government? natedogg [/ QUOTE ] You mean the city council dictating city high school policy? Give me a break. This is exactly the role of local government. |
