It's because of my dear, old mom! My dear, old, 78 year old mom (who calls me 368 times a day) is the reason that I have my phone! So when I go to Gila River she can't call me and tell me that the noodle pudding that she cooked and brought over to the American Legion was a success. Then, when I get up to go to the restroom and get 30 feet away from the poker area I see that I've got 42 missed calls. THAT's why I'm a cell phone nit. I'm also an 'that was the answer of an imbecile' nit. I can't help it and her answer was a doozy.

How do I look in that pic, btw? Really nuts, right? Great pic that one and they got it right on the first go-round.

I agree with Howard.

First, there's a very very good chance the manager you talked to has zero visibility into the decision making process to improve or not improve the signals.

But, and I know it's not a total apples-to-apples comparison, Wynn had MAJOR cell phone issues when they opened. It was costing them business. They finally installed relay towers or whatever and now every provider works. It's simply a customer service issue.

And I think Howard should go to his windows, open them, stick his head out and yell exactly that.

Obviously *Network* is one of my favorites. And it has stood the test of time and proven itself prophetic. Watch cable news these days and realize that Paddy Chayefsky was a genius.

Honestly, do we really know that Alltel works? Who has Alltel? My theory is that they do have a cell phone blocker and don't care to discuss the decision with people.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can buy a cell phone blocker about the size of a cell phone I would expect it works for about 100 feet or so and I think I would buy one if I go back to live casino play just so no one can use their cell phone around me.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm kinda liking this idea....
as soon as that annoying kid on my right answers his phone, turn on the blocker and start playing poker instead of waiting for the ass hat to say "check" "oh, was it my turn" "hold on, i'm in the middle of a hand..... check.... ok, now what were you saying again"

I don't mind phone service being available, but Im getting to the point where I won't play in a room that lets you talk at the table on your phone. If it's that important, get up and have a conversation and come back when you are done.

Howard, please forgive my hijack, but this midwesterner has a dumb question.

AFAIK, the tribals in AZ have been open several years, and they are surely making good money. Why are they still in tents????

The podunk little tribals in NE Oklahoma down the road from me have managed structures of some sort. Granted, one is a Quanset hut, and they are in tornado country, but still.....

Hearing about CAZ's tents has always baffled me.

Again, apologies for hijack, but really curious.

Howard, I'm a woman too so maybe I don't get your logic. I don't want cell phone reception in any poker room ever. I don't like wives and girlfriends nagging players to get off the table and go home. I wish every poker room would install a cell phone blocker like hospitals do. The worst I've heard so far is a poor man in Tunica who got a phone call from his SO who was in JAIL wanting him to bail her out. Jesus. Good for him, he nicely told her that he couldn't help her and continued to play but a lot of guys succumb to any repeated calls and nagging. The last thing I need is for players to get called away by drama queens, nagging partners, and dependent significant others.

Male buddies and "others" at least show up and do the nagging in person. It's because they want to borrow money to keep playing as long as their friend is playing, sure, but at least they have to make an effort to get off their hind legs, drive to the poker room, and find their friend before the nagging starts. I just plain don't think it's right that all someone has to do is get on a stupid phone and start nagging someone from a distance and interfering with players in a game. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Drama is a sad reality of life for losers, but the less drama that comes to these people over the cell phone when they're trying to lose their money, the better as far as I'm concerned. In any event, as the woman says, she isn't in charge of where the cell phone companies put their towers. I haven't found the company yet that provides complete coverage of everywhere I go. Explain this: I can make a phone call on Verizon from the rain forest in Puerto Rico or Diamondhead in Honolulu but not from Big Bend, West Texas. There I would have to use Cingular or nothing. No poker rooms in any of these areas to be blamed for the differences in service. It's towers, plain and simple. Not familiar with the area you mention, but perhaps there's a similar issue there?

[/ QUOTE ]

wow that's a great story and was also very informative about the topic at hand

But there are times and places that if I couldn't take along the cell and expect to be able to get a call, I couldn't leave the house.

[/ QUOTE ]

A good number of people, including myself, have this constraint. I am only able to go to my closest cardroom once a month because I must be available at all times. If you do not have the responsiblities in your life that require that level of availability you can not understand the limitations that inavailability of cell phone coverage causes. I would easily play 10-15 days a month if only cell phone coverage was available.

See, the poker room managers job is to make money for the poker room. If the poker rooms construction prevents a number of players from providing the poker room with revenue then the poker room manager has failed.

Now, the communication skills demonstrated by the OP are the matter of another concern.

Note: On the one day a month that I do play I have to leave the casino and check messages once an hour. That is not fun my friends.

PS. There is no problem with cell phone usage in hospitals and many hospitals have staff carry wireless communication devices of varying types, including cell phones.
