I'm not sure on this but the advice I've been receiving is that these freeware programs are great to have and will help a lot but without the necessary upgrades from MS your PC will eventually become infected and the removal will not be pretty, i.e. format. Whereas if you had the updates and still managed to get infected the removal would not be as hard. Again that's just the advice I've received, I'm not that knowledgeable on the whole thing myself.

If you get hacked or compromised it's gonna cost you a whole lot more than the price of a genuine XP. I hate to give Bill Gates any more than he already has but it's for your own good.
