Exam difficulty

Thanks for all the replies.
He ended up giving us a chance to rewrite this as he did not want to fail most of the class.
Rate my professors was not an option--this is his first semester here, and I couldn't find anything about him from his past universities.

There's a happy ending to the story.

We got our rewrite back and the grade only went up to a B-. Again, this was near the top of the class. He also left the impression that there would be no curve.

He let us worry for about a week, then handed back our midterm. This time the grades were more in line with what I would expect from my other classes that required papers. He also definitely confirmed that there was a curve, and the ranges he gave means that I am getting an A.

After this, his whole demeanor changed for the better. I think that he was bluffing to weed out the slackers. From what I've been hearing, he did the same in his other classes.
