(a-rod vs. pujols is not kings vs. aces, but it could be QQ vs. JJ)

[/ QUOTE ]

Um, QQ has the same advantage over JJ that AA does over KK.

I have the first pick in my fantasy baseball draft. I'm curious as to whom the forum thinks should go first. Is A-Rod the no-brainer pick? Anyone for Pujols? Others? Sell me on your guy!

[/ QUOTE ]

If, for some bizarre reason, A-Rod is eligible to play shortstop (like the guy running the league doesn't know any better) he's the only person you could possibly pick first.

If not...A-Rod. Johnny Damon gives A-Rod 15 more RBI

If A-Rod and Pujols are pocket jacks and queens, then who the hell are pocket aces and kings?

if i wasn't clear before, the point i'm trying to make is to maximize your total EV, not gain a competitive advantage over another specific player.

hypothetical prop bet: i get dealt only AA and JJ for a session, and you get dealt only KK and QQ. let's see who makes more money.

the point is that in general, a mistake in the first round of your draft is much more costly than a mistake later on.

but the talent dropoff between available players is always steepest at the top, and if you pick sub-optimally there it will take several rounds to get it back.

[/ QUOTE ]

I know what you're saying here, but the difference between A-Rod and Pujols is small enough that there's no way that picking either can be a very large mistake. Picking someone else would be nutty, but as long as you stay with these two guys, you'll be fine.

(Add another vote for A-Rod, if we're still counting).
