The chip stacks don't matter, the ratio does. I assume you don't have big stacks because you have a limited chip set, right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not due to a limited chip set, I guess it's more that we bet say 20 instead of 200 or 50 instead of 500 and so on. So yeah ratio I suppose.

I'm not a rebuy fan but in my current league season, 2 out of the 14 games will be rebuy tourneys. I'm only doing them to help pump more money into the season end pot/kitty. I do believe though that if you're gonna do a rebuy you should also allow an add-on, but players should not be allowed to do both...they can either rebuy or add-on but noth both. I also do not believe that a rebuy or addon should ever be in excess of the games initial starting stack.

Here is my setup:

$30 NL tournament
* Rebuys - Players will be allowed 1 rebuy during the first three levels or 1 add-on at the end of level three. In order to rebuy, a player must first bust out. Full rebuys will be for $30.

Add-ons will be available at the end of level 3 and players will be allowed to buy back up to their initial starting stacks (but not allowed to exceed their starting stack). For a T10,000 tourney, every T1,000 in chips would cost/be worth $3 (T1,000/T10,000 = 10%...$30 x 10% = $3). Players can add-on in T1,000 increments, at $3 per T1,000, back up to their T10,000 starting stack. Money for the Add-ons will only be in $3 increments, so a player needing less than a full T1,000 increment would still have to pay $3 even if they are receiving less than T1,000. So a player with T1,400 at the end level 3 (for example) would be allowed to add-on up to T8,600 in chips for $27 or a lesser amount in T1,000 increments.

OP, rebuys are awesome! The crowd that gathers at my place every few weeks is a large range of talent as well as financial committment to playing cards. Many are just there for the social part.

We usually spread a $20 buy in w/ a reduced rebuy like $15 or so. $5 bounty is also in play. Even that is a bit steep for the low range players. Rebuys from them are little. We had 3-4 rebuys and 6 add-ons for that game w/ an attendence of 15.

Edit: Rebuys and add-ons are the same as starting stack of T5000. First BB is 200.

However, my friend and I decided to try something different for last weekend. We decided to lower the buy in to $10 to encourage the lower stakes players to show up and possibly rebuy.

The result was pretty great. Only 9 players showed and I adjusted the blind schedule accordingly. We really got the best of both worlds as the blinds were near perfectly smooth, delaying the 'push' game, yet we had 11 rebuys during our 5 round rebuy period. We also had 5 add-ons. The best number we've had yet, pushing the total pot to $250 for 9 players. Bounties aren't even included in that.

Also, we made the rebuy rounds 30 minutes (were 25) and the rounds after the break 20 minutes (also 25 previously).

We were worried that the small buy in was going to create a meager pot, but surprisingly, the game seemed to loosen up and we had several big pots and there was really no hemming or hawing over whether people were going to rebuy.

It was great. Almost all of our tourneis will be rebuy tournies as they are just more fun and give the casual player the opportunity to play more when they bust out early because they play every hand. If they aren't in the game, they can't be as social and will leave, perhaps not returning if they didn't enjoy themselves.

We will however be having a big game soon (like our WSOP or something) w/ deep stacks and slow blinds for a long afternoon to evening game for about $40, no rebuys.

Should rebuys be allowed for home game tournaments?

[/ QUOTE ]
It depends on what your crowd is like. If they like to gambool it up and are willing to spend some extra money, then yes, re-buys are a fun way to encourage action early on in a tourney.

[ QUOTE ]

My tournaments are usually a $15 buyin for T800 in chips with standard progression blinds.

[/ QUOTE ]
I don't know what your standard blind progression is with T800. If you aren't starting at 5/10 then your tournament is going to be a crap shoot VERY early on. Make sure stacks start with at least 75BB for a decent tourney. We play with 100BB starting stacks and our tourneys usually last about 3.5-4 hours. Re-buys will add a little length to your tourney, but no more than 1 or 2 levels.

[ QUOTE ]

If a rebuy should be allowed, should it be for the full amount of $15 or for $10, which will only get you T400, and you can only rebuy if you've busted out.

[/ QUOTE ]
It should be for the full amount. Like Larry said getting fewer chips sucks. The idea of re-buying is to be able to compete in the end. If you aren't getting a full chipstack by the end of the first hour you are going bust out on your short stacks.

I've wanted to stray away from it, but there is strong support for multiple rebuys in my tourneys, espcially from those who like to gambool it up (and who have the means to do so). It makes for a fun tourney and unique situations week to week, as different tables have different quantities of chips. Yet through it all, the same people tend to place (usually not most of the gamboolers), so I'm not too concerned about it.

We start with T2k for $30, unlimited T2k rebuys for $20, then after two hours rebuys end and one T3k add-on for $20 (antes kick in at this point). It's a structure fine-tuned to achieve a certain balance of elements for our crowd. With 20-30 people it usually lasts 5-6 hours including a dinner break. Prize pool usually $1500-$2k. Not bad for those of us who don't need all those rebuys.

Sounds like you have developed a really great structure that works well with the crowd that you have.

Keep on havin' fun.

Could you elaborate on your blind schedule for the T800 tournament. We're thinking about using T800 and I would like a good place to start.

Thanks

Josh

Rebuys are a must for our tournaments, because I have people coming from out of town - sometimes 3 to 4 hours away - to play. Not going to let them bust on the second hand and be done.

We start with 10000 chips for $25. If at anytime you get down to 5000 chips in the first five blind levels (20 minutes apiece), you can rebuy another $5000 chips for $10. If you go bust-o, you can do a double rebuy for $20.

At the end of the first five levels, regardless of chip count, we allow another 5000 add-on for a discount of $5. Deep stack poker. Tournaments last about six hours. People love them.

We normally have between 14-20 people.

Blind levels:
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300

color up 25s - end of rebuys - add-on time

2500/5000
5 hours

3000/6000
4000/8000
5000/10000 (we don't go any higher)

We pay 3 spots for 9 entries
4 spots for 12 entries
5 spots for 15 entries
6 spots for 20 entries

First place is usually about $250.

Here is how we play our rebuy NL tourneys which occur about every 5 or 6 tourneys.

The standard rebuy is t5000 for $40. At the start, you can make one or two buys. You are allowed two more of the same rebuy amount anytime up to the first break when your stack gets less than t5000. At the break, there is an add-on option of t7500 for $40.

These tourneys are very popular due to the action during the first hour and the decent stacks people have starting the second hour.

The cons are that the tourney lasts longer than normal and the host needs a decent amount of chips in his set. However, in my mind, this is well worth it.

Edit: I should have noted that in our freezeouts, we start with t10000 and first level 25/50. We keep the same blind structure for the rebuy tourneys.
