Re: **Official** 2006 Film Award Season Thread
My prediction is, unless the Academy decides to finally award Scorsese Best Director for "The Departed", Greengrass is going to take the director award, regardless of who wins Best Picture. "United 93" was just too critically acclaimed a film to ignore, and "World Trade Center" proved how difficult 9/11 movies are to pull off. There are no obvious acting performances to nominate in the movie, and screenplay is most likely out, although it might get a nomination. It's probably too much of a downer to beat "Dreamgirls", the kind of female friendly film that has come to win the Oscar lately, so the obvious way to honor it is to give the award to Greengrass. And if you think about it, it truly is a director's film, and the best direction of the year.

And finally, bets pic. Letters from Iwo Jima The Departed The Illusionist DreamGirls The Queen Apocalypto [/ QUOTE ] I highly doubt that dreamgirls, the queen, or the illusionist will get best pic nods. Babel will have a good shot, the good german, and the good shepard will also be very strong canidates. Breaking and Entering also is rumored positioned to be a possible best picture canidate |

Re: **Official** 2006 Film Award Season Thread
I think it's awesome that Peter O'Toole looks to be the front-runner for Best Actor this year...I think it's between him and Forrest Whitaker...Hellen Mirren seems like a lock for Best Actress.
I agree that Paul Greegrass has a great shot at Best Director. My ten Best of the year will be posted after the New Year... |

Re: **Official** 2006 Film Award Season Thread
I wouldn't rule out Little Miss Sunshine for a major nod.
Interestingly, WTC is making waves for the Globes, out hyping United 93. I think that the one thing that will kill United is that it is foreign-made. Also it is a tough subject. It really is up to the academy if this movie is to be looked at. What contrast if Little Miss Sunshine -vs- United 93 -vs- Letters -vs- DreamGirls. An article in the LA Times explained why Crash won over Brokeback Mountain. Simply that Brokeback was too in-your-face, that Crash felt edgy, but safe in the end. That the voters felt like they were making a statement without going over the edge. I think that with politically-pointed movies possibly facing off this year, there may be a slant toward something more fun. |

Re: **Official** 2006 Film Award Season Thread
Since O'Toole has been nominated seven times and never won, last time in 1982, this could be his year. It's him or Forrest Whitaker. If O'Toole is nominated and doesn't win, I believe he takes the record for most nominations - no wins, breaking the tie with Richard Burton. I don't believe they'll be so cruel.

A ton of critics LOVED it and 4 or 5 big awards will put you right back in the Best Picture race. i just can't see WTC making all that much noise. then again, i haven't seen it. |

I just saw The Illusionist and even though I thought it was ok I can't see it winning Best Picture. Maybe best costumes or settings and things.
