Anything by Kurt Vonnegut. They're entertaining, fairly quick reads, and can fit into your back pocket. The trifecta of good commute reading.

[ QUOTE ] Of course it's advertising and poorly-written. It's free. Get a subscription to the Times FFS. [/ QUOTE ] Seriously, I love the newspaper for train reading. Articles in the major papers are much more interesting than free crap. You can have it delivered or buy it at the station so its easy to get. [/ QUOTE ] I don't. It's hard to read a big newspaper when you are crammed into a subway like a sardine. Also, my commute is really the only time I have to read a book during the week. So yeah, I understand that a newspaper is certainly an option. But for the purpose of this thread, let's stick to books. |

I'd recommend starting with Breakfast of Champions and Cat's Cradle. Then maybe Sirens of Titan, Slaughterhouse-Five. Oh, and his collection of short stories is called Welcome to the Monkey House and they're really entertaining. |

Re: Light reading suggestions: An easy read for the work commute
You didn't really say fiction or non-fiction so it's hard to narrow stuff down.
P.J. O'Rourke is usually interesting and almost always funny. Republican Party Reptile is a really good one. Note, he's very right wing, and I'm not right wing at all, but I still like reading him. The guy is funny whether or not you think he's right about anything. Anyway, he writes magazine-length or shorter pieces. I tend to like light, funny stuff on commutes. If you've never read Woody Allen's "Without Feathers," it's great and recommended. Someone recommended Vonnegut; he has a book of short pieces called Wampeters, Foma, and Granfalloons(sp? on all of that!) that's good quick reading. |

Haven't read High Fidility, but Fever Pitch is a great book for this.
