It's kindainteresting to think about what he would have been like if he was still alive. I think he would have probably been a mix of Phil H and Mike the Mouf. Except probably better at poker.

[/ QUOTE ]He won 30% of the major tournaments he entered, Phil Hellmuth is a moron, and I doubt he would even have a record, if Stu was alive

lol @ best player of all time. The guy ran good against small feilds plain and simple. so many internet tourney players today that are much better than him.

[/ QUOTE ]I said the best "tournament" player of all time. This isn't even an argument. Those fields he went against? Are you implying that Jaime Gold is better, because he faced more people?

Stu Ungar was brilliant, but that brilliance was also matched by the tragedy and self-destructiveness of his short life. I found the book compelling... and if you speak to the surviving legends of poker (Doyle, Sexton, so on), perhaps you would hold him in higher regard than you seem to in this thread.

You are a moron. The guy is the best tournament poker player of all time. So what if he was a junkie? Kurt Cobaine died because he was a junkie, that doesn't make him a loser. They couldn't control their demons, but you are a moron. Go die in a grease fire.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think if you're a junkie you are also a huge loser.

There is great long thread somewhere where Stu Ungar's daughter posted a lot in response to people asking about her father / the movie about him. Maybe someone could find it.

Stu was the first person who just played like a complete lag. He was a fish in the cash games but it worked in tournaments because no one could adapt against him. This is going on hearsay of course, but a ton of sources say the same thing. Years ago, people did not raise from middle position with nearly the wide range of hands you would do so today. Stu was the first one to really go after the antes and blinds as much as people do today. That's why he was successful. As a straight up NL holdem player he wasn't even near the best.

Books about interesting things tend to sell. Degens can be pretty interesting.
