Villan seems like a standard pstars player, not too good. I was actually happy at the 8 being a safe river card. What is the right play???

Well judging by his preflop and flop action, you're right, this guy is pretty bad.
And considering the turn added 2nd pair to his already massive combo of 1 overcard + gutshot call on flop, you were destined to go broke if you had bet the turn as he was never folding and you'd now have to call the river.
As played, the fact that it came runner, runner 8 makes the river a hard fold as the only hand that you could think he could hit was maybe 89s or he slowplayed a set and just boated up?
It depends on whether he's the sorta Villain who plays wierd cards and then only shoves the goods or he's the sorta Villain who plays wierd cards and constantly bluffs scare cards.

Whichever sort of villain he is, he could quite legitimately be value betting a lot of hands that you beat here after you check the turn behind. Not to mention bluffs. It's not that much over a pot-sized bet

AA, re-raised pot, you're going to go broke aren't you? (Esp on a fairly unscary board.) I thought that was standard. Also a slightly larger 3-bet pre-flop would prob be better
