Re: Be a millionaire but take this low-paying job, please.
I would do this.
I think most of the difficulty with working a normal well-paying job, say accountant or lawyer, is the stress and responsibility of your work that you carry around with you. Being an accountant with a large client less on April 7th just sounds awful to me, or being a lawyer and worrying constantly about your place in the firm or the big settlement or whatever. When you take one of these low-paying jobs, they might not challenge you, but you can go in, have no responsibility, go home and live comfortably. I think your general level of happiness will be MUCH higher with this scenario. Even though you may be working a 40-hr workweek, if your job doesn't require your constant attention, you have time for reflection and self-examination. I think this is a quasi neo-Aristotelian concept, and it's often lost in the way we think about how we want to live our lives. I'd pick a job where I can ask people questions, or explore or something, or basically just chill. I like the pizza delivery guy answer personally. |

Work in an independent record store. Or independent book store. Basically, any place that has handwritten "staff pick" placards on various shelves.
I am in a fantasy football league with a bunch of people who all work in an indy bookstore, and they all really seem to enjoy what they do. -McGee |

[/ QUOTE ] Two things wrong with what you are saying, although it is well thought out and has some merit. First, the rock bottom paying jobs are usually extremely repetitive and unchallenging. Very few people can be happy never being challenged at all or ever doing anything interesting, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It's soul-destroying. Everything about you but the body dies. Second, social approval means a lot to most people. You don't have to necessarily have tons of it, depending who you are of course. Some people do. But people do tend to think of people at the bottom as "inferior" and often treat them as such and talk about them as such. It's pretty strong in our economically Darwinist society. Being the lowest guy may be okay in wages, but being socially pooped on is not cool. If you're in an environment where there's really not much of anybody at the top, it can be more bearable. But if there's a notable hierarchy above and you're below, you become the poop in the bowl, my friend, and that's not easy to take. |
