Usually around here there are gas-stations and such at every corner, so just pretend you're turning into it, then continue and exit out the other corner. Make sure there are no cops around.

In the spirit of the thread: No need to stop at 4 way stops if no one is in it or stopped at it. You can just cruise on through.

Another note: if you are in a shopping mall parking lot or on other private property, you can disregard stop signs entirely. Since it's not a public roadway, you cannot legally be ticketed (although you can still be held at fault if you cause an accident.)

Passing on shoulders is definetly the way to go. I use to drive 2 hours down 75 2 times a week and semis passing 4 semis takes forever at 60 mph. So passing on the shoulder = a lot of time gained. Although the cops can be bad in Ohio on 75 but wasnt pulled over once in the 2 years Ive been driving there. All the advice is good but pretty basic. Also onramps are easier than exit ramps unless its one of those really long exit lanes. Definetly check the shoulders for debris, cars, signs before you pass on the shoulder though.

flash other effecient drivers if you have just passed a cop, especially at night.

[/ QUOTE ]

I sometimes do the opposite. If I see someone coming towards me on a one way road and 10 cars are tailgating the first car, I flash the first car so he goes even slower.

On major highways, sometimes the off-ramp is a lane separate from the highway, the exiters go off and cars coming in do so onto this lane, then the lane comes back in to the highway. Sometimes I use this lane as an opportunity to pass traffic or slow cars across all lanes.

Oh, that reminds me of a super-advanced move. Sometimes you'll see a real short off-ramp, then it intersects a street with a light and leads straight into an onramp. If you're driving along on the freeway (right lane as usual) and you see the light turn green, you can hammer it, jump up the offramp and back down the onramp.

This isn't so much for efficiency as just for the fun of it.

BTW cops use this move from time to time to "disappear" when pacing.

There is a freeway here in town where I've seen this move done specifically for efficiency. The Loop 101 through the Indian Rez adjacent to Scottsdale (and Casino Arizona) has a dedicated entry/exit lane and signals that are frequently green for the exit traffic, as well as the ability to drive straight ahead and get back on the freeway. One time the freeway was jammed and I noticed a bunch of drivers pulling this move, basically never leaving the exit lane. They were easily going 2X the speed of the rest of the traffic.

Force your way into traffic: Someone already established in a lane may have the legal right of way, but if you want his spot, you have the physical advantage as merging traffic. If someone is providing at least a foot of space between him and the car in front, start to change lanes as the gap is about 3/4 of the way back on your car. Push as far as you can into his lane without hitting either car. You can use your turn signal here, but only after you've started to change lanes. It's telling the guy you don't intend to change lanes, you ARE changing lanes, so GTFO of the way. Since your car's nose angles in first, you can squeeze it right into the gap, and if you do it right, you're essentially creating a situation where the car behind will have to make a conscious decision to run into your car if he wants to continue fighting for position. No one ever does this. You win every time

I ran a guy in a sporty little merdedes off the road doing this. The lane merges into a single lane, I usually let one car in but this time i let in two. Mercedes passes 4-5 guys behind me and thinks he will be three. I left a couple feet to tease him, (yeah, I know I can be an ass) and he did a little nose bob swerve type thing a couple times but I never let the gap widen nor swayed over. Eventually the lane ran out and he was on the shoulder still trying to pass until he hit a muddy area just before a ditch. After all that he turned left into a subdivision about 400 yards down the road.
