nice post. I'm still looking for good stuff, but I'm definitely giving to:

Heifer International - they give live animals to people, the theory is the same as the 'teach a man to fish' saying

legal aid minneapolis - my mom was a lawyer here, they work for cheap/free for poor people in minneapolis

gamblers anonymous - I mean come on, half the purpose of giving is to make me not feel like a terrible person for making money off these people. If there's a better way to help people with gambling problems, someone point it my way? I don't know anything about it, but I would rather give to something less religion-based if it exists and is effective (and if GA is religion-based, I don't even know).

medécins sans frontiers (doctors without borders) - good stuff

american civil liberties union - more good stuff

but yeah, I'm still looking for good places, please keep posting your ideas! By the way, if people are looking for a good way to decide how much to donate, I reccommend reading this from terrence chan's blog:

http://terrencechan.livejournal.com/88412.html

reading that reminded me, where should I give for science related purposes? I'm considering the JREF, cause I have a huge crush on James Randi, but that's not really research so much as stopping people from believing stupid [censored].

Well, the one good thing about charity is that there's never enough of it - you'll never run out of needy people, even if it's the local volunteer fire department or something.

I gave at least $10,000 in 2006 to the daughters of peasant farmers in Thailand. I do what I can for the third world

Nicely done Degen. But remember: more than your money, they really need your love. And more money.

Good reminder strassa.

Does anyone else hate/boycott United Way as much as I do? Charge highest admin fees of all charitable organizations, corrupt management, etc.

I don't think donating large sums of money at 25/50+ counts as charity
