[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] What exactly do you have in mind? IIRC the first revolutionary controller was the NES which had a joypad instead of a joystick. Then there was the analog stick, which I think was first on the N64, although I could be wrong about that(was PS1 first?). [/ QUOTE ] dreamcast had analog triggers. Btw: most of what failed in "revoluctionary controllers" aren't famous (for obvious reasons) so most of the public doesn't know them, but google for it, I remember seeing a list of the 10 worst controllers ever made, funny stuff. PS: that madden preview for the wii was the first thing that worried me about the controller, it looks horrible. It was N64 and Nintendo is indeed always brining the next step in video game controllers. The cube introduced analog triggers, btw. [/ QUOTE ] dreamcast had analog triggers. [/ QUOTE ]But has one of the major players(Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sony, Atari, etc.) ever failed at one? And more importantly, has Nintendo ever failed at one? I know they've failed at some minor projects, but never the main controller. |

but every successive nes system has had a new feature on the controller and it's always worked
sure things like power glove, etc weren't wonderful, but they weren't part of the regular controller nes: joypad instead of joystick snes: buttons on top l/r of controller n64: analog stick, yellow buttons, z button on back game cube: analog buttons on top |

Always worked? GC controller wasn't that great. I put it on par with the regular Xbox Controller. I think the bar was set with the PS2 controller and the new 360 controller is much more similar to the PS2 controller then the GC controller.
Is the current PS3 controller photos the ones they are actually going to stick with (look like a boomerang), if so, I think there going in the wrong direction controller wise. |

i like the GC controller
and that's not the point the new thing, analog triggers on top, works very well that's the whole point of the argument, that there have been successive new methods of controls on each new system and they've always worked fine |

Also I think we can agree that there is a difference between introducing a new analog stick )or a d-pad, or choose-something-great-nintendo-helped-develop) and turning a game controller into a tv remote. Stuff like this generally fails, that's all I'm saying. |

key point from madden article: companies are focusing on GAMEPLAY with the Wii and making sure the control works well AND feels natural
wii is gonna rock if most of the companies do the same thing, which i think they will |

personally, if they were all the same price, i'd buy the Wii
but the price differential is one of the main reasons that I believe the PS3 won't do as well compared to Wii as PS2 did compared to GC btw, is it possible that microsoft/sony end up releasing wii-esque controllers for their systems in the future if wii works and sells well? would they need to change anything internally, or is it mostly the controller with the sensors/accelerometers that matters? |

[/ QUOTE ] Sony already has done that. The inital PS3 controller design looked something like a boomerang w/ the standard PS buttons. The new "redesign" after the Wii was announced goes back to the Dual Shock 2 design of the PS2 except now it has motion sensing capabilities (lol Sony). They don't really play it up as much though probably b/c a) they just kind of threw it in and haven't planned for it and b) dont want to draw attention to the fact that they blatantly copied Nintendo. |
