Baseball needs more games because the variance is high.
Football needs a 16 game schedule because the variance is lower. This means baseball is a higher variance game in the short run that is equaled out in the long run because of the length of the season. Hence, a short series or single game has more variance than a long series. Answer this, if the '98 Yankees and the '02 Tigers play 1 game, what percent chance does the Tigers have to win? (10%?) If they played 1000 games, what percent chance does the Tigers have of winning 501 or more? (absolutely less than 10%). |
