Is Harvard generally considered the #1 school in the US? Yes, it depends upon the program, department etc. but in the UK Ox and Cam are considered the 2 best for sure, and us Limeys get the impression that Harvard is #1, ahead of amazing schools like Yale, Stanford, MIT etc. [/ QUOTE ] I believe Stanford is the hardest to get into now, and has the highest graduate salary. Both are probably helped because they are in California though. |

All, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, etc. degrees are all pretty equivalent in the US imo. However, internationally, the name Harvard definitely still makes a difference. Also still makes a difference in certain society circles. [/ QUOTE ] Mentioning Harvard to pick up chicks or gain respect is refered to as "dropping the H-bomb." |

I'm at Oxford in the UK, just wondered how you Americans would compare it to ivy league schools. I hear for undergrad degrees, we have basically the most resources poured into us than anywhere else in the world, does this sound about right from your experiences of Harvard, Stanford etc

[/ QUOTE ] this is true, but people who say they went to "the college" or "the divinity school" or "the business school" need a good strangling. (I've heard all of the above, which is particularly appalling living in an area (Boston/Cambridge) with various elite or very good colleges/universities in all those categories). in fact, when I drive through Harvard Sq. tonight, I'm gonna huck a cinder block at someone. |

Michigan did the whole Harvard of the Midwest/ Harvard, Michigan of the East thing when I went there in the early 90's. I assume most non-party schools did the same.
