I don't know if that's a great situation--where would you go? If he made it 50 feet into the air he must have hit the quarter-pipe at a good clip--at least 25 mph or so.

[/ QUOTE ]

40 mph, absolute minimum.

We might as well calculate this out:

A basic equation of one-dimensional motion is Vf^2 = Vi^2 + 2ad. Plugging in 0 as Vf, -9.8 for a and 15 for d, I get 12 meters per second for Vi, which is in the neighborhood of 27 mph. In any case, it's still too fast to get a running landing off of the board.

It looks to me like what saved him is that he didn't slam directly into the flat surface. He landed on the bottom part of the quarter pipe and slid out onto the flat surface. That little bit of an incline where he landed may have slowed him down just enough that he didn't die.

I'm actually looking forward to the E-team on PTI today, since they will almost certainly talk about this.

Why the hell am I so strangely attracted to that random chick in your avatar?

About 10% of the 2p2 population seems to be really into her. Infer what you will.

suzzler,

That 10% should be permabanned, your avatar puts me on monkey tilt.

Also, LOL at this subject running here and OOT concurrently (and some people posting in both). Certainly calls into question the validity of this "sport" that the OOT one wasn't locked or moved.

The x-games sucks, but I actually liked this event. Since these sports generally bore me, it takes the excitement of knowing that a fall could lead to death to keep me interested.
Obviously this would be much better live.

This isn't right. It's ~40mph.

Ep = Ek
mgh = 1/2mv^2
2gh = v^2
v = (2gh)^0.5
v = (2 * 32 * 50)^.5 = 56.5 ft/s

56.5 ft/s = 38mph

edit: your equation was fine (same as mine, really), your calculation was wrong.

How about some sort of mattress system, where they can slide them in quickly if someone goes up and out of control like this guy did.

I think that could work. They shoot out in half a second or less, saving the dude from potential death?

[/ QUOTE ]

What about giving them a parachute?
