Re: So many to choose from
[ QUOTE ]
He knew he didn't need to know, John. [/ QUOTE ] That's why that one instance stands out in my mind. Without sounding too goofy, it was a visceral trancendant connection with another human being. With humor being the final resort or last means of connection. |

Re: Internet Legislation Prayer Reminder
[ QUOTE ]
"I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it." --Voltaire [/ QUOTE ] "Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies." - Voltaire (1694-1778) on his deathbed in response to a priest asking that he renounce Satan. I love Voltaire. |

Re: Internet Legislation Prayer Reminder
[ QUOTE ]
Fundamentalists creep me out. But I'm not denying the power of prayer for inducing improbable effects in the individual body. [/ QUOTE ] That reminds me of something interesting I read that has probably been mentioned on this forum already: Why won't god heal amputees? There seem to be thousands of "studies" proving prayer heals the body, why has prayer never healed an amputee in the history of the planet? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, and that carries such strength. I think the situations in warfare that evoke the principle of valor comes more from those situations than anything else. You look across the lines, realize for moments your enemy is as human as you are. And each of you still do the necessary things because it still matters. I'm a young pup in a world that's been relatively peaceful my entire life. But I understand this ideal well enough from talking to and reading memoirs of Canadian veterans during both WW1 and WW2. And it floors me, even when very little else does. |
