Most places, "Cards Speak" the fact that he tabled the hand and the dealer mucked it(or almost mucked it) i feel that the pot is his. He does not have to technically announce his hand, he merely has to show it and the pot goes to the best hand. The 2 things i think you are stuck on is that the dealer accidentally mucked his hand, when she should not have and he ALSO did not know he had a straight. If he turned his hand over and said "I have a straight" but the dealer mucked his hand anyway would you make the same argument. Unfortunately i don't think that not knowing you have the winning hand on a tabled hand loses the right to the pot. Stupid on his part but its his pot.
