Re: Phil Hellmuth: Donk or not?
I thin he's a good player with self confidence issues. I've seen him play pretty bad, but I've also seen him do really well. Like any poker player, I suppose.
There are other players in the game I would say are clearly better than he is, though. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] However, he is no match for a good player or a table of good players. Especially in a non-tournament setting [/ QUOTE ] Check the link I ve posted and listen to what he has to say in that interview. He talks about that a lot of people say he s a bad cash game player. [/ QUOTE ] I have seen it. Everything I said is true. [ QUOTE ] Besides he is one of the best readers in the game, he is in very good shape stay on top of the Poker World for the next 15 years to come. Alcohol, drugs and bad bankroll managment seem to be unknown words for Phil. Again, he seems to be a very smart person knowing his skills and goals. [/ QUOTE ] Where are you getting your information from? |

Re: Phil Hellmuth: Donk or not?
He's clearly a great NL Hold'Em tournament player, the results say as much. It would be impossible for a truly bad player to win as many events as he has and to have all the final tables without wins he does.
As others have pointed out, his biggest strength seems to be extracting chips from bad/inexperience players (which is quite handy in a big field tournament). His play against tougher opponents and in cash games or other poker can be debated. AKA Doyle Brunson is a much better all around poker player, as he has great results in not only NL hold em tournaments, but also cash games, and also other forms of poker. People let their personal feelings about him taint their opinion of his play. |

Re: Phil Hellmuth: Donk or not?
Of course sympathy plays a role but like I already pointed out, how many players in the world are able to make that laydown with AK against AA? Honestly? And that play is an example of how great of a player Hellmuth is.

[/ QUOTE ] yeah but this one time i saw him lose by getting it all in preflop and it was just a race...? i mean come on, if he's that great why is he racing for all his chips. i see the guy "supposedly" "look" into his oppenent's "soul" all the time, and then what? he pushes and gets called by top pair. if he's that good, he should know the guy's gonna call. at some point he has to just admit that he's a slightly above average player that's played in every event for 25 years. doyle and johnny chan have played about 25% the wsop events he has in the last ten years and they have 10 bracelets too. what you fanboys have failed to address is that he's a donk. ps: "why would he lie about his cash game results"????? are you serious-like???????!1!!!???? |

Re: Phil Hellmuth: Donk or not?
jojobinks has to be messing with us here.
During the 1990's, Phil Hellmuth was easily one of the top 5 NLHE tournament players in the world. He's still pretty high up on that list, no doubt. But there are some incredible players out there that I believe can trump him in tournaments as of today. As previously mentioned, Phil is great at extracting chips from weak players. He's had limited success against good players though. The only true exception to the rule is the 2005 NBC HU championship. I don't know much about his cash game skills, but most pros seem not to have any respect for his play in side games. |
