Now show me yours.

[/ QUOTE ]

I had a cell phone about 7 or 8 years ago. After a long stress-filled week, I was headed to the casino on a Friday evening about 6 pm.

My cell phone rang, and some chuckle head started telling me about some stupid problem. All I could think of was "Why are you bothering me about this meaningless problem, NOW?"

Without giving a reply, my cell phone "accidently" went sailing out the car window, I haven't seen it since, nor have I purchased another one of the annoying devices.

Amazingly, I have been able to survive all this time without being in constant contact with people telling me blow-by-blow descriptions of their stupid lives.

I think OP's best bet might be to print off a couple of the pages for the doohickeys he found that do the job and present them, along with a well-written description of the problem, to casino execs (*NOT* poker room execs). The fancy doohickeys seem to be in the $3000 range and will require external antennas and cable runs, so it won't be cheap or easy for the casino. But they may go for it, if you don't scream at them for thinking like a woman. Blatant mysogyny is rarely successful at turning an argument to your favor.

Honestly, do we really know that Alltel works? Who has Alltel? My theory is that they do have a cell phone blocker and don't care to discuss the decision with people.

You can buy a cell phone blocker about the size of a cell phone I would expect it works for about 100 feet or so and I think I would buy one if I go back to live casino play just so no one can use their cell phone around me.

Cell phone blockers are illegal in the US. Let's hope casino security has scanners that can detect and zero in on clowns like you so the FCC can ram a $10000 fine down your gullet.

They are not illegal, and every hospital I know of uses one. This is in southeast Louisiana. I'm also aware of a fine restaurant in California who uses them. They post warnings that you must go outside to call, and then they go about their merry way. Never been to a hospital in California but I don't doubt that they wouldn't risk having some stupid cell phone interfere with their equipment. Blockers are perfectly legal to use and are in use right now. Who starts these rumors?

If you read your own link, it says that "malicious" jamming is prohibited. Quite another matter. I can't set up a blocker in my house to mess with my neighbor's ability to use their phone in their own home. But as a hospital administrator seeking to protect patient health or as a restaurant owner seeking to protect patron's peace and quiet, it's another matter.

Apparently the federal government. Did you not look at the link? I knew someone would dispute me if I didn't include a reference, so I put it right there in the post.

Passive blocking of signals is fine. You're welcome to turn your restaurant or theatre into a Faraday cage and keep the pesky signals out. You're also welcome to post "NO CELL PHONE USAGE" signs and enforce compliance by tossing customers out who violate it. But you're not welcome to come to a poker table with a jammer and broadcast signals to jam the cell reception of everyone within 100'. That's illegal and in theory can land you in jail.

I'm no cell phone addict. Last month I had 7 minutes of usage. Month before was 2 minutes. But there are times and places that if I couldn't take along the cell and expect to be able to get a call, I couldn't leave the house. I don't use the phone at the table, I step away from the table to a corner of the room or out of the room to have a conversation. And yeah, I get just as annoyed as anyone else at folks who exhibit bad cell manners. But it's not ok for any random anarchist to decide he knows better than I whether or not I should be able to get a call.

Active jammers are not legal in the US.

However passive blocking systems are not illegal, but passive blocking systems are basically construction techniques designed to block all signal from coming through the building. You can't just bring one to a poker room you need to build the room.

It would be quite possible for a hospital to use passive jamming technology, but many hospitals wouldn't want to do this because they actually allow staff to use cell phones (presumably because staff is trained as to where such use is problematic) Neither passive jamming or active jamming could be set up to allow cell use by some and not by others.
