The Searchers is generally regarded by pretty much everyone to be one of the all-time greats.

it's on Time's 100 films list.

They Shoot Movies, Don't They? has it #7

Sight & Sound's critics poll has it #11

Not according to the previously mentioned link. Academy Awards

Edit: And looking back at that page I see that Cool Hand Luke was not nominated. Maybe not the greatest film ever but God I love that movie.

2001 was nominated for director, screenplay and art/set direction. It won for visual effects.
