I think Jay Bilas said it best: when there's upsets, the committee did a great job selecting teams. When there's not, they did a good job of seeding. They always do a great job.

Part of this may also be that the teams are more properly seeded throughout the tourney than in previous years. Not necessarily RPI, but all the things to consider might better judge the teams. Also the fact that they try to give the top 1-3 seeds 1st and 2nd round games close to home if they can. That is a big factor.
