FWIW, he makes about 52k a year from what I've gathered. He's a 2nd Lt.

I don't know much about the structure of the armed forces which is why I ask this. How many ranks above a sgt is a 2nd lt? is a 2nd lt someone that pretty much rarely goes out into combat?

Even I cant agree that we owe him anything. I appreciate the hell out of him and his peers and respect them, but no, I dont owe them anything.

Edit:

I just saw this:

Even to me the other day because he never buys beer for the house.

If I was a marine, Id say the same thing as your buddy. I dont think any military personally should ever have to buy drinks.

WHY??? Super retarded. I would hardly call Iraq a conflict that had our freedom in jeopardy. We do owe the vets of the World Wars......

You are an idiot for making a distinction between the wars, in regards to this issue.

Sounds like the same kid that believes life is fair and society owes him for just living.

My bro is in the Army and your room mate is [censored] stupid.

[/ QUOTE ]

FWIW, him and my other roommate (also a marine) always make fun of the army about how they always go in after the marines and mess things up so the marines have to go back in again. I don't really know much about the military, but found this kind of an odd sentiment.

[ QUOTE ]
start with what he means by "civilians owe him"

[/ QUOTE ]

I'll let you interpert that for yourself. He's said it to me about buying beer. He's said it on the road about people letting him over. He's said it about cops and speeding tickets. He's said it about bouncers who give him a hard time with his military ID. He's said it about a lot of stupid [censored].

Serious answer: No one owes your roommate anything. One of the things he's volunteered to defend is the right for other Americans to treat him like [censored].

Really serious answer: He's not a paratrooper so tell him to STFU.

Sgt's are NCO's which are non commissioned officers. Loosely translated to the civilian world they are middle managers. These NCO's all started out as enlisted soldiers and worked their way up from Private(or Corporal) to Sgt. Master Sargents do get paid fairly well, but you have to be in for a while. Once you are at that rank, you can pretty much call a 2nd Lt a moron(in a nice way) and a smart LT listens to him.

2nd Lt is a commisioned officer. Its the lowest office rank, however still technically above a Master Sgt. Only commisioned officers can achieve ranks like Colonel or General.

2nd Lt's do not get paid well, however they do get a lot of nice benefits. They do get paid more than most enlisted soldiers.

I probably haven't explained this well.

I agree, that really can't affect the judgment of the individual soldiers since they aren't deciding which wars to start.

I also agree that the guy shouldn't be buying drinks--I buy all my friends in the army or marines drinks--but beyond that, I think it might be getting to his head, especially since he hasn't been deployed yet. But I'm not even in the military so I'm not going to hate on the kid.
